On X, the Secret Service said it was \u201caware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW\u201d \u2014 one block from the White House \u2014 and was \u201cworking to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground.\u201d It said it will have an update shortly.<\/p>\n
In a social media post, FBI Director Kash Patel said officers were responding to shots fired and said he would \u201cupdate the public as we\u2019re able.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police cordoned off access to the White House and National Guard troops blocked an AFP reporter from entering the area in downtown Washington.<\/p>\n
CBS News reported that two people were wounded in the shooting, citing sources.<\/p>\n
The two were a suspect and a possible bystander. The suspect was in a critical condition, and the second person was in serious condition, the sources said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomewhere between 15 and 30 gunshots were fired during the incident,\u201d the report added.<\/p>\n
“FBI is on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds,” FBI Director Kash Patel said on X.<\/p>\n
Canadian tourist Reid Adrian told AFP he was in the area when “we heard probably 20 to 25 what sounded like fireworks, but they’re gunshots, and then everyone started running.”<\/p>\n
Journalists who were on the White House North Lawn at the time said on X that they were ordered to run and shelter in the press briefing room.<\/p>\n
ABC News correspondent Selina Wang had been recording a video for social media when the apparent gunfire broke out, capturing the sounds of the shots as she dove to the ground.<\/p>\n
“It sounded like dozens of gunshots,” she said on X.<\/p>\n
A Secret Service spokesman told AFP in a text message that the agency was still gathering information about the incident.<\/p>\n
