After Amir Timur’s death in 1405, his grandson Khalil Sultan (depicted) seized power in Samarkand on the 16th of Ramadan (1405), thus initiating the 1st Timurid war of succession (1405-1409).
Despite his participation in Timur’s Indian campaign & previous governance experience, Khalil Sultan faced immediate challenges.
*Khalil Sultan ignored Timur’s will, which named his grandson Pir Muhammad as his rightful heir. In 1406, Khalil Sultan defeated Pir Muhammad near Qarshi. Matters worsened when following his defeat, Pir Muhammad faced a rebellion led by the influential noble Pir Ali Taz, who ultimately had Pir Muhammad killed.
*Khalil Sultan’s rule lacked recognition from Timur’s heirs & nobility.
*His unpopular policies were exacerbated by famine, leading to widespread opposition.
*His wife, Shad Mulk, worsened matters by antagonising Timur’s widows. She favoured the promotion of inexperienced individuals of low birth, alienating Timur’s life long comrades & companions.
*Khalil Sultan’s troops, composed of displaced tribes, abandoned him due to their desire to return home. Despite his initial generosity, using both Samarkand’s treasury & the dynasty’s wealth, loyalty waned as gifts declined.
*With Pir Muhammad’s demise (Timur’s chosen heir), nobles turned to Shah Rukh. As the sole surviving son of Timur, Shah Rukh emerged as the natural focal point for the nobility’s aspirations.
*The dissatisfied nobles who had now paid allegiance to Shahrukh defeated Khalil Sultan in 1409 as he attempted to withdraw to Ferghana to raise more troops. He was taken prisoner & submitted to his uncle, Shah Rukh, who in return released Khalil Sultan & gave him the governorship of Ray (Iran), were he later died (1411) of natural causes.
Shah Rukh triumphantly entered Samarkand on May 13th (1409), ending Khalil Sultan’s short reign & the first Timurid war of succession. Shah Rukh’s reign over the Timurid empire endured for nearly four decades.
