Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Russia on Monday for discussions on regional and global issues, following a stop in Islamabad for talks on ending the conflict with the United States, state-run media reported. Upon arrival in St. Petersburg, Araghchi said the visit provides an opportunity to discuss the latest developments with Russian officials. He is scheduled to meet senior Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, in Moscow. Regarding his “successful” trip to Pakistan, Araghchi stated that the negotiation process with the US was reviewed.

Blame on US demands
“Changes have occurred in the negotiation process, and incorrect approaches and excessive demands by the US caused the previous round of talks, despite progress, not to reach its objectives,” Araghchi said. “Therefore, it was necessary to review the current situation with our friends in Pakistan.” He also described his visit to Oman as “necessary” to develop broader relations with neighbors and manage existing problems. “There is a great deal of common understanding between us and Oman, and it was agreed that consultations will continue at expert levels.”

Conflict and mediation
Since the US-Israeli war against Iran began on Feb. 28, Tehran has maintained control of the Strait of Hormuz, while the US imposed a naval blockade on April 13, disrupting global energy supplies. Washington and Tehran held talks in Islamabad two weeks ago but failed to reach an agreement. Pakistan brokered a two-week ceasefire on April 8, later extended by President Trump.
