A US strike on a water desalination plant in the southeastern coastal village of Bunji, in Iran’s Hormozgan province, has left approximately 10,000 people without access to drinking water, a local official has said. The attack “completely disrupted the supply of drinking water to 20 villages with a population of about 10,000 people,” the CEO of the Hormozgan Water and Wastewater Company told Tasnim news agency.
Humanitarian Impact
The official said the affected villages are now facing a water shortage crisis, highlighting the civilian toll of the escalating conflict. The desalination plant had been a critical source of fresh water for the region, which is already arid. The strike is part of a broader wave of US attacks on Iranian infrastructure, which have included bridges, power facilities and telecommunications towers.
Diplomatic Failure
The military escalation continues despite a Pakistan-brokered memorandum of understanding signed in June that was intended to end the conflict and establish a lasting peace agreement. The exchange of attacks has intensified in recent days, with Iran also striking Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
